Minimum Age

Discover the minimum recommended starting age for TTRS

Written by Harry Alexandre

We typically recommend waiting until children are at least 7 years-old to begin learning to type with TTRS. It's important that their hands are big enough to rest comfortably on the keyboard and reach all of the keys.

Using TTRS at different ages

Touch-type Read and Spell (TTRS) is designed to support students of different ability levels, at different stages of learning.

  • Younger children 5-7: TTRS can be used as an early phonics and reading/spelling tool for young children, particularly if the focus is more on pressing keys vs. using proper hand position for typing.

  • Children ages 7-11: Children can start learning to type with TTRS from age 7, while strengthening reading and spelling skills.

  • Pre-teens and teens 12-17: Older children who are looking to acquire typing skills while also practicing phonics, spelling and reading skills find TTRS is an excellent solution. The primary focus is on typing, so there's less embarrassment over needing to work on literacy skills.

  • Adults 18+: Adults can use TTRS to learn touch-typing when they've not been successful using other programs and approaches. TTRS is also an ideal way for adults with learning differences to build reading and spelling skills for work, study, or personal development. It can be helpful for improving keyboard confidence and accuracy in everyday tasks.

Learners can work through TTRS at a pace that suits them, regardless of their age or starting point.
