If you’d like to create your own typing modules in TTRS but aren’t quite sure where to start, AI can help. It’s a great way to turn your ideas into a structured starting point. AI can generate a general template based on your input, providing a set number of typing modules that are ready for you to review, adapt, and expand. If you already have something specific in mind, you can give more detailed instructions and simply refine the output to suit your needs. All you need to do is complete a short form and enter your subject prompt—AI will take care of the heavy lifting, giving you a strong foundation to build on.

How to Add Content Using AI

Step 1 - Visit the Subjects page from the top menu and select Create a new subject.

Step 2 - Choose the Create using AI option. Note, if you'd prefer to enter your own content manually, have a look at this help guide instead.

Step 3 - Fill out the Create a subject with AI form.

  • Subject name --> Enter a name for your subject

  • Category --> Select a category from the dropdown list. If you can't find the right category to describe your subject, you should use the "Custom" option.

  • Subject prompt --> This is an important field as it determines the kind of output the AI will give you. Describe in a sentence or two what you would like the content to look like. You might want to mention a topic or word form to focus on (i.e., Create a subject about rainforest animals, Teach adverbs that end in ly), the target audience of the content (i.e. third graders, children learning about the environment), and include any other instructions/details that might be relevant (i.e. start with shorter words that are easier to spell, leave out words with a negative connotation).

  • Subject size --> Choose how many levels you would like and how many typing modules should be in each level. We recommend starting with a smaller subject of 1 level and no more than 31 modules. Keep in mind, the larger the subject you request, the longer it will take to generate.

  • Subject difficulty --> Select the right difficulty level for the student(s) who will be using the subject. If you choose "hard," the system will generate lower-frequency vocabulary and more complex sentence structure.

  • Subject format --> Choose an option from the dropdown menu. You can create typing modules that focus on vocabulary words only, words with example sentences, or a subject that features dedicated vocabulary, sentence and dictation modules, just like the Main TTRS Course.

  • Make available in --> Be sure to select the English language spelling conventions your student(s) are learning. If there is a mismatch between the language you choose here and the language set to your students' accounts, the subject will not be visible to them, even after it is shared.

  • Description --> Enter a student facing description for your subject.

Step 4 - Click on the Generate subject button. There can be some delay in producing results when larger level and module numbers are requested.

Step 5 - Look through the modules that were generated and make any required edits. Use the Actions dropdown menu on the top right and select Edit subject to change the subject title, category, language and/or student facing description.

You can edit a module itself by clicking on it. You may wish to remove, change or add words, adapt sentences or include an additional line. You can also adjust the module name to help you remember the content it teaches.

You have the option to add images too. These can be used to help clarify meaning, for example when teaching homophones, or enhance multi-modal learning to help material stick. To add an image, select the photo icon at the end of the line and follow the prompts.

Sharing Typing Modules with Students and Classes

When you are happy with your subject, select Actions and Share subject.

You'll have the option to share it with individual students, all students, individual classes or all classes.

The custom subject will then appear under the All subjects and My subjects tabs in a student's account. It will have a symbol next to it to denote it was created using AI.

Deleting an AI Subject

If you're not happy with the modules created by AI and would prefer to try again with a new subject prompt, you can easily delete your subject using the Actions dropdown menu --> Delete subject option

More Tips on Generating Content with AI

  • Try to enter a robust description in the Subject Prompt section vs. a list of topics.
e.g. Create a subject that teaches vocabulary related to weather and climate change and is appropriate for fourth graders, Create modules that practice commonly misspelled words for third graders, Explain the concept of gravity in easy to understand sentences

  • Choose the correct format. Decide if you want your subject to just teach vocabulary, or if sentences are also appropriate. If you'd like the subject to mirror the format of typical TTRS modules, select an option that includes dictation exercises.

  • Edit your subject after it has been generated to simplify language and build in repetition where necessary. Please note, AI is emerging technology and it's crucial to double check its output before delivering the generated typing modules to students.
