Choosing a font for better readability

Explore the available fonts in TTRS to find an option your child feels comfortable reading

Written by Erin Piquero

The way text looks on screen can influence how comfortable it feels to read. Some learners prefer simple, familiar letterforms, while others find different shapes or wider spacing easier to see, particularly if they experience visual crowding or have difficulty distinguishing between letters with similar shapes.

TTRS offers several font options, allowing you to personalize the learning experience and find the one your child feels most comfortable using.

Explore the available fonts

Each font is unique. Encourage your learner to try out a few options and pay attention to which they find easiest to read.

  • Arial: A familiar sans-serif font with clean, straightforward letterforms. Its simple appearance makes it a useful starting point when comparing different fonts.

  • Comic Sans: A rounded, informal font with letterforms that resemble handwriting. Some learners prefer its friendly appearance and distinctive letter shapes.

  • Open Sans: A sans-serif font with open letterforms and balanced proportions. It offers a clean, uncluttered appearance that some readers may find comfortable.

  • OpenDyslexic: A font developed with dyslexic readers in mind. It features distinctive letter shapes with weighted bottoms and wide spacing. Some readers may prefer this font as it facilitates distinguishing between similar-looking letters.

  • Lexend: A typeface designed with reading fluency in mind. Its letterforms and spacing are intended to support comfortable reading and may appeal to learners who find closely spaced text difficult to follow.

💡 Pro tip: No single font works best for everyone. Encourage your learner to compare the available options and choose the one they find most comfortable.

Try high-readability fonts

If your learner has a visual impairment, finds decoding tricky, or struggles with reading on screen, OpenDyslexic and Lexend are two fonts worth exploring. Both are designed with readability in mind.

OpenDyslexic uses distinctive letterforms with weighted bottoms and wider spacing.

Lexend focuses on clear letterform design and spacing to support reading.

The best way to find out which font works for your learner is to have them try each option during their usual TTRS sessions. Remember, you can adjust a font's size as well.

How to change the font in a student account

Students can select their own font preferences through their account settings.

  1. Sign in to the student's TTRS account.

  2. Open Settings and select the Appearance tab.

  3. Find the Font dropdown and choose an option.

  4. Save the changes and let the student try the new font for a module or two.

  5. Repeat with other available fonts to compare the options.

How to change the font from an admin or teacher account

Admins and teachers can change font settings for individual students or configure a preset for a group of learners. This is useful when you want to provide a consistent reading experience across a class or tailor settings to specific learning needs.

Option 1: Adjust a preset for a class or group of students (Education subscribers only)

You can update an existing editable preset or create a new one with your preferred font settings.

  1. Sign in to your TTRS admin or teacher account and open Settings.

  2. Select the preset you want to update.

  3. Open the Appearance tab and choose your preferred font from the Font dropdown.

  4. Save your changes. If you're creating a new preset (for example, if you're trying to make a change to the default TTRS settings), give it a descriptive name and save it.

  5. From the presets list, tick the checkbox next to the preset you want to apply. Open the Actions dropdown and select Apply to students.

  6. Select the relevant students and confirm by clicking Apply preset.

  7. Remember, if you assign them a new preset, this will overwrite their existing account settings. You can also open each student's personal settings and select a font individually.

Option 2: Change the font for an individual student

If you only want to change the font for one learner, you can adjust their personal settings without creating a new preset.

  1. Sign in to your admin or teacher account and open the Students tab.

  2. Select the student whose settings you want to change.

  3. Open the Actions menu and select Settings.

  4. Go to the Appearance tab and choose a font from the Font dropdown.

  5. Click Apply changes to save the student's updated settings.

You can also access individual student settings through the Applied to tab of a preset in the Settings area.

Adjust settings to enhance readability

Give your learners time to try different fonts during their regular TTRS sessions and experiment with different font sizes, text and background colors - all of which can enhance readability. There is no one-size-fits all approach, the goal is to find what works for your student!
