Using Education Funds to Purchase Touch-type Read and Spell (TTRS)

How to pay for TTRS using an ESA account

Written by Erin Piquero

If your family qualifies for an Education Savings Account (ESA), Education Freedom Account (EFA), or similar state scholarship program, you can use those funds to pay for a Touch-type Read and Spell subscription.

TTRS is available through ClassWallet in multiple states and is reimbursable in most other state programs. This guide walks through how to use your funds, what category to choose, and what to do if your state isn't listed.

Why TTRS qualifies for ESA funding

TTRS fits two of the most commonly approved spending categories across every state ESA program:

  • Core curriculum — a structured typing and literacy course with measurable progress, lesson plans, and printable certificates

  • Assistive technology / SPED resource — an evidence-informed tool for dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism, and dyspraxia

This means TTRS is typically eligible whether you're using ESA funds for general homeschool curriculum or for a child with a documented learning difference.

Three ways to pay with ESA funds

Option 1 - ClassWallet Marketplace (recommended)

If your state ESA uses ClassWallet and TTRS is active in your state, you can pay directly without going out of pocket.

  1. Log in to your ClassWallet account

  2. Search for "Touch-type Read and Spell" or "TTRS"

  3. Select your subscription and submit for approval

  4. Once approved, you'll receive your login details by email

Tip: See our Service Providers and Vendors article for the current list of states where TTRS is active on ClassWallet.

Option 2 - Reimbursement

If your state allows out-of-pocket purchases with receipt-based reimbursement, you can subscribe directly on our website and claim the cost back.

  1. Subscribe at readandspell.com

  2. Download your itemised receipt from your TTRS account, or email support@readandspell.com to request one

  3. Upload the receipt to your state ESA portal under Curriculum, Educational Software, or Assistive Technology

  4. Keep a copy for your records - most states require receipts to be retained for 3–5 years

Option 3 - ClassWallet debit card

If your program issues a pre-loaded debit card, you can use it directly on the TTRS website to subscribe, then upload the receipt to your ESA portal under the appropriate category.

Which ESA category to choose

TTRS qualifies under all of the following categories. The exact wording varies by state, but any of these is appropriate:

  • Curriculum & Instructional Materials

  • Educational Software & Subscriptions

  • Assistive Technology

  • Resources for Specific Learning Differences

  • Tutoring & Supplemental Instruction

Programme description for your ESA submission

If your state portal asks for a justification or product description, you're welcome to copy this:

Touch-type Read and Spell (TTRS) is a structured, multi-sensory typing and literacy course designed to develop reading, spelling, and keyboarding skills. It is used as a core curriculum component and as an assistive technology resource for learners with dyslexia and other specific learning differences.

What you'll need for your ESA claim

For most programs, your reimbursement or pre-approval submission will need:

  • An itemised receipt showing your TTRS subscription, dates, and price

  • Vendor details - Touch-type Read and Spell, contact email, and website

  • A programme description for the educational purpose (template above)

  • The student's name matching the one on your ESA account

  • A spending category - Curriculum, Educational Software, or Assistive Technology

We provide all of this automatically in your purchase confirmation email. If you need anything additional - a custom invoice, a vendor approval document, or a detailed letter explaining how TTRS supports dyslexia - email support@readandspell.com and we'll send it within one business day.

My state isn't listed — can I still use TTRS?

In most cases, yes. Almost every state ESA program allows reimbursement-based purchases for curriculum, educational software, or assistive technology, even when a vendor isn't on the official marketplace.

If you're not sure whether TTRS will qualify in your program, contact us before you subscribe and we'll help you check. You can also nominate TTRS to be added to your state's approved vendor list - most programs accept nominations directly from families.

Frequently asked questions

Is TTRS based in the US? TTRS is developed in the United Kingdom and used worldwide. Our content is in English, with US voice and spelling options, and we provide US-formatted itemised receipts for ESA claims.

Can I use TTRS for more than one child? Yes. A family subscription covers multiple learners, which makes TTRS especially useful for ESA families managing budgets across siblings.

How long does reimbursement take? This depends on your state - typically 2–4 weeks once your receipt is uploaded. ClassWallet direct-pay and marketplace routes are usually faster than reimbursement.

What if my reimbursement is denied? Contact us. We can provide additional documentation - a more detailed product description, evidence of educational use, or a letter explaining how TTRS supports dyslexia and structured literacy goals — that often resolves the issue.

Does TTRS qualify as assistive technology? Yes. TTRS was originally developed for learners with dyslexia and is widely used as an assistive technology resource for dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, autism, and dyspraxia.

Which payment options do you accept? We accept PayPal, all major credit and debit cards
